LEGISREPORTS NG – There is palpable tension in the House of Representatives as members have tasked the speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and other principal officers with a demand for an increment of their quarterly allowance to 45 million naira.
The members who are becoming restive as the general elections draw closer yesterday at a closed door meeting held the leadership to ransom on the increment demand thereby fueling fears about the seat of the speaker, his deputy, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha and other principal officers of the House.

The members who currently earn no less than 33 million each on a quarterly basis, held their leaders to task at the meeting which held in the new wing of the Reps wing of the national assembly complex.Sources confirmed to LEGISREPORTS that the members expressed dissatisfaction with their “meagre” earnings compared with the “profligate” income of their leaders who are said to have full control over the budget of the legislature.
Another source at the meeting reported that Tambuwal and other principal officers who spoke tried to call the members down with veiled threats of the diminishing public perception of the House as a reason why they should bear with the status quo.But feelers from the green chambers indicate that the demands for increment may be acceded to due to the mounting pressures that could threaten the jobs of the speaker and other principal officers. Both arms of the federal legislature receive a lump sum of 150 billion naira annually to run its affairs with no breakdown or accountable means of understanding how this sum is spent.
The issue of jumbo pay for Nigeria’s federal legislators have always been one sore point of the current democracy where lawmakers in the country are notoriously reputed to be the highest paid in the world.LEGISREPORTS has reported exclusively in the past how members of the House have been pushing for and receiving jumbo salaries for themselves in sharp contrast to the alarming poverty in the country where the minimum wage for public workers is 18,000 naira monthly.
