PMAN Leaders and Registrar of Trade Unions Meet in Abuja to Address Internal Dispute and Strengthen Union Growth

Abuja, Nigeria – October 25, 2024

The Performing Musicians Employers' Association of Nigeria (PMAN) held a crucial meeting with the Registrar of Trade Unions, Mr. Folonipe Amos, on October 22, 2024, at the Registrar's office in Abuja. This meeting was organized to address internal conflicts within PMAN’s leadership and discuss a path forward for resolving disputes to ensure long-term growth and unity within the union.

The meeting, which began at 11:46 am, saw Mr. Folonipe Amos opening with a welcome message to attendees, highlighting the importance of finding an amicable solution to the internal issues PMAN currently faces. Mr. Amos expressed disappointment at the absence of some key members, including suspended National Working Committee (NWC) members Sunny Neji, Zaaki Azzey, Steven Michael Ugochukwu (Ruggedman), former PMAN General Secretary Mr. Boniface Itodo, and other aggrieved parties. He emphasized the goal of interpreting PMAN’s constitution to ensure that all leadership actions align with the union's governance rules.

PMAN President, Mr. Pretty Okafor, presented a detailed account of events leading to the dispute. He noted his continued efforts to maintain union stability despite the challenges, affirming his dedication to ongoing PMAN projects such as the PMAN House, PMAN Radio Station, and the development of PMAN-owned land in Abuja. Mr. Okafor revealed that he had personally advanced PMAN’s goals by acquiring radio equipment and securing international partnerships to elevate the union’s interests. However, these efforts reportedly met with resistance from certain NWC members, resulting in tensions and an attempt to unseat him during an official overseas trip.

The Registrar clarified that the NWC reports to the National Executive Council (NEC), PMAN’s second-highest governing body, which holds the authority to overturn NWC decisions if necessary. He advised all parties to adhere to PMAN’s constitution and assured them that internal union disputes are best addressed through the Trade Union Dispute Act.

NEC members in attendance echoed concerns over allocations among NWC members and emphasized the need for a more inclusive decision-making process, particularly in ways that benefit PMAN’s state chapters. In a show of support, the NEC expressed confidence in Mr. Okafor’s leadership, presenting him with a formal letter of commendation for his dedication to steering the union through challenging times.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Okafor thanked attendees, the Registrar, and stakeholders for their support and reaffirmed his commitment to PMAN’s growth and unity. He announced plans for establishing local secretariats in each state chapter, reinforcing his vision of a cohesive and resourceful PMAN.

The meeting concluded with renewed commitment among all parties to resolve internal disputes amicably and uphold the PMAN constitution, ensuring the union’s progress and success for Nigerian musicians domestically and globally.
