It is no more news that Kudirat Gbemisola Salami,
popularly known as DJ Kulet, is one of the hottest female DJs in Lagos.
What is perhaps new, the fact that she has become
the toast of many celebrities when it comes to doing what she knows how to do
best. She is red hot at the moment. She is making waves big time. Her delivery
and charisma is making way for her.
She is good at dejaying and that makes her a lot
in demand for shows and to play at parties.
Another thing that distinguishes her from other
DJs is the academy she started, to train youths in the business of dejaying.
And so far so good, many youths can testify to having been able to drink from
the fountain of her knowledge.
How did DJ Kulet start her career years ago? What
has really worked for her and made her the toast of many celebrities now? These
and many more, were the questions she answered in this chat with City People.
Read the excerpts below.
How did you start your career as a DJ?
I will say I love dancing a lot. I just love
dancing. My career as a DJ started with DJ50 in Surulere. I got in contact with
him because I love to dance. I wanted him to take me with him whenever he goes
for events so I can go and dance. It was from there that my career as a DJ
started. Until 2015 when DJ Tee discovered me on social media and groomed me to
the next level professionally.
You always love to dance to Fuji music too, what
informs that?
I love every genre of music but I enjoy Fuji
music. Many believe that it is for the elderly, but I decided to put myself
into it, as no female DJ in the world does what I do with Fuji music. It’s
music with meaning.
How did you come up with the name DJ Kulet?
A cousin of mine gave me the name Kulet, that was
before I became a DJ. When I started as a DJ, it was difficult to find a name,
so I adopted Kulet, which is from my name Kudi.
There was a time you were not known, but now you
are popular, tell us about the transition?
When I was not known, money was not coming in
(laughs). People will tell you to do things free, Now I am a brand and I can’t
do things any how. I can't wear slippers around and do things as before. It
also makes me look forward to doing new things and be more creative in my work.
What has been the most challenging time in the
industry?
The most challenging time for me was when my
colleagues looked down on me especially the male. They will be telling me that
I can’t make it in the industry and not even the junior colleagues but the
seniors and you will be scared that I might not really make it but I was not
moved by whatever they said. I'll say God is in charge and he will see me
through and that is what has been keeping me going.
So what is the acceptance out there?
It has been really great and everyone is trying to
associate with the brand and I am really grateful for it.
Ten years in the industry, what has been your
trying time? Time you just felt you should quit?
I could remember the day I was invited to a club
and when I got and the MC introduced me as a guest DJ, people did not clap or
give any encouragement of any and they all sat down. I played and played, even
trending and hit songs but they didn’t dance.
I tried old skool, new skool everything and they
did not dance still. So I just got home and said I was not going to do DJ again
but trust me, I went to that same club again, they did not even introduce me
and I started playing and everybody danced and danced and that was when I took
the mic for the very first time and told them my name is DJ Kulet but they
didn’t know because they have forgotten and I reminded them I was the same DJ
that came and they did not dance and now you people will dance so much that you
will even forget your car and they were like, is she really the one? And they
started debating if it was me or not and since that day I told myself that I
can do it and I will not mind what anyone is saying.
What is that thing that people don’t really know
about you?
People don’t know I am a church girl and I am also
an indoor person. If I wasn't doing this
DJ thing, then I would be at home. I am not a party person, I used to be when I
was in the world but now Christ has taken over. I am not saying I am holy but
when Christ takes over, there are some things that would definitely change
about you. You have to leave some friends and so on. People would even ask,
what is wrong with you lately, we don’t see you in our parties and so on.
