.
Since the current political dispensation began in 1999 to date, Rivers State has not
witnessed where the office of the Governor of the state was occupied by the
choice of the outgoing executive governor. In 2007, Dr. Peter Odili tried to
have Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as his anointed Governorship candidate but having
won the Governorship primary election in December 2006, by February 2007
President Olusegun Obasanjo during the flag off of the Governorship campaign in
South-South by Peoples Democratic party at Port Harcourt, Amaechi’s governorship
candidacy was described as having K-Leg. Certain unexplained infractions led to
protracted legal tussle between PDP and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi who went on
self-exile in Ghana until Supreme Court of Nigeria on 25th of October, 2007
ruled that in the eyes of the Law Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was the Governorship
candidate of PDP and not his substitute Barrister Celestine Omehia who never
contested the Governorship Primary election’
Again in 2015 as the then incumbent governor
Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was leaving office, he planted Dr. Adol Dakuku
Peterside as his surrogate but like a political Tsunami, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike,
the then Minister of State for Education of same Ikwerre ethnic nationality
with the outgoing Governor appeared on the campaign ground for PDP and won
governorship election in a landslide victory that stunned Chibuike Rotimi
Amaechi.
Now in 2023, will Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike have
his way to singlehandedly install his choice of the former Accountant General
Siminialaye Fubara of PDP as the duly elected Governor of Rivers state with the
exclusion of PDP stakeholders who have left the inner cabal structure of
Governor Wike? Only time will tell.
