“To proclaim that there must be no criticism of the
President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not
only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the public.”
-Theodore Roosevelt.
Every government must have her fair share of criticism as
much as it may enjoy goodwill support from the people. Those who do not demand
for “change” are those who are comfortable with where they are”.
Yes! We now have a change of government but the struggle is
not yet over, for it is our collective responsibility to ensure this government
succeeds but in doing so we must not allow our sentiments be it political
interest, religious, tribal or regional affiliations becloud our sense of
judgment. We must be willing to lend our voices in support of the truth that
will ensure justice and equality for all.
On the 29th day of May, 2015 equally dubbed as Democracy
Day, Nigerians and the world indeed witnessed a new dawn in the annals of our
History as we the black pride of Africa’ collectively took another giant leap
towards entrenching the culture of democracy by ensuring the smooth transition
of “leadership” from one civilian administration to another.
My preference of using transfer of “leadership” instead of
the commonly used word “Power” is due to the fact that we have over the years
been subjected to cruel treatments and mismanagement of our resources by a
select few whom by the privilege given to them, have abused it and become so
much intoxicated with the “power” the result for which we have seen how our
elected officials act with impunity and obscene arrogance under the protective
covering immunity of wielding enormous “power”, which gives them a demi god
followership.
Our leaders therefore must be made to understand they are
servants of the people and not masters of our enslavement under whatsoever
guise. We as a people also owe a patriotic responsibility to them by ensuring
we support their people oriented policies and where they fall short of our
collective expectations it is our moral duty to also criticise them objectively
with the intent of reminding them of their oath of office which primarily is to
better the lives of the people.
The inauguration event of yesterday has indeed achieved yet
another milestone in our quest for making progress and consolidating on our
drive for an egalitarian society. Democracy indeed has proven to be the best
option of governance for our teeming populace with great diversity for
Nigerians spoke through the ballot and their voices reflected their choices at
the polls.
Today, the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari and his
Vice Prof. Yemi Osinbajo can be said to be the will of God. For there’s an
adage that says “the voice of the people is the voice of God”.
There’s no gain saying the expectations of Nigerians are
high and towering into the clouds of heaven just as the masses cried for change
and supplications were made by all of our people of diverse faiths for the much
desired “change” today we have a new government in place and Nigerians are
eager to see their expectations and promises made by our elected officials met.
It is said that Rome was never built in a day, therefore
Nigerians will have to exercise patience and show understanding to this new
administration. Our country is indeed experiencing an austere phase in our
history with a dwindling source of revenue accruing to the nation due to over
reliance on income from the petroleum Industry and endemic corruption.
Now our
leaders will have to diversify our economy if they must meet up with the task
of ameliorating the sufferings of the masses through job creation, provision of
basic infrastructure and revitalization of our economy for progressive
development.
I sincerely have high confidence in the character and
capability of our new president for been a man with uncompromising principle of
discipline and a strong aversion for corruption, but he is human therefore he
is imperfect and he will also be subject to criticism in the event he performs
below our expectations. Now that he has assumed leadership of this great
country it is my candid prayer that he succeeds despite the daunting challenges
visible today.
As a youth my expectations from him would not be any
different from that of my peers as we are all expecting him to create more
employment opportunities, fight corruption, reduce the outrageous cost of
governance, build and improve on our decaying infrastructure, strengthen our
schools to produce quality graduates and ensure all Nigerians are secured
irrespective of their places of abode.
Finally, I would expect my president to scout for genius and
patriotic Youths that he will include in his cabinet so as to bridge the
generational gap of governance between our leaders and the youths who
constitute our teeming population. After all, we the youths selflessly
championed his campaign for change despite the meagre resources at his disposal
for publicity we contributed from our lean purses and we triumphed against the
campaign of calumny mounted against him by the ruling party.
Our compensation should not only be by providing us with
education and jobs but also giving us a platform to lunch our leadership roles
and that will enable us take our rightful place in the comity of nations with
the ever changing dynamics of global politics allowing youths to assume great
leadership positions.
I think we the Nigerian youths are also ripe for
Leadership and in due time we shall arise to demand for another “change” when
the hour comes nigh.
God Bless The Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!
God Bless President Muhammadu Buhari.
God Bless Vice-President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo
