A dangerous and reckless political scandal has erupted in Lagos as Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, the Oniru of Iruland, shamelessly manipulates legislative affairs in a desperate bid for power.
Reports have exposed the monarch’s blatant interference, as he mobilizes members of the House of Representatives against the directives of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Even more appalling, he has been coercing lawmakers into pledging allegiance to his sister, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. It is alleged that the traditional ruler summoned 36 Assembly members to his palace, forcing them to swear an oath of loyalty in a brazen attempt to install his sibling into power.
This disgraceful overreach is an unforgivable insult to Lagos' political stability. Never in the state’s history has a traditional ruler been so desperate to dismantle governance for his selfish ambitions. Rather than being a symbol of tradition and peace, Oba Lawal has chosen to align himself with chaos, attempting to dismantle the enduring political structure that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu built and safeguarded for 26 years.
Beyond his sinister political moves, the Oniru has become a symbol of land-grabbing tyranny, fostering disorder by breeding thugs to enforce his corrupt agenda. His insatiable greed and misuse of traditional authority have not only destabilized Iruland but now threaten the wider Lagos political sphere.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who once supported this so-called king, must now recognize that he has unknowingly empowered a traitor. The Oniru is no longer just a local menace; he is a direct threat to the stability of the administration. The President must act swiftly to curb this insubordination before it further undermines his leadership and causes irreparable damage to Lagos.
The time has come for the Lagos State Assembly and the Federal Government to intervene decisively. A traditional ruler who abandons his sacred duty for political destruction has no place in governance or society. Lagos cannot and will not be held hostage by a power-hungry monarch whose only legacy is treachery and disarray.
