Students of
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife were fortunate to escape when fire gutted
one of the rooms in Moremi Hostel of the university.
It was
gathered that the fire occurred at Room A304 of the hostel mid-day Thursday,
when the school was on break.
According to
eyewitnesses, the fire outbreak was likely caused by electrical appliances.
Among the
items that were lost to the outbreak included beds, clothes, books, and
kitchen utensils.
It was
learnt that it took the joint efforts of porters and students to stop further
escalation of the fire.
A student,
who identified herself as Tolu said most of the students were indoors relaxing
when the outbreak occurred.
She said,
"We were all sleeping when the fire broke out. We just noticed that there
was thick smoke from one of the rooms. We all rushed out and started to look
for water to stop it."
Another
student added that the occupant of the room was nearly injured.
"The
girl inside the room narrowly escaped. Most of the occupants of the room have
travelled except her in the room. If not for prompt intervention, we will be
talking of another thing now," she said.
