Suspected
thugs suspected to be affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC)
political party have allegedly attacked the crew of African Independent
Television (AIT) in Ekiti State.
This how
Sahara is reporting the story
The
television station’s crew were in Ikere Ekiti, Ado Ekiti State, to transmit ‘Live’
coverage of the Labour Party's (LP) Governorship Candidate, Michael Opeyemi
Bamidele, campaign rally.
The campaign
rally was attended by party stalwarts, which included Governor Olusegun Mimiko,
of the Ondo state, and the Party's National Chairman, Mr. Dan Inwanyanwu.
The thugs
brandished weapons, guns, and other weaponry, before descending on their
targets, and made away with equipment, and other accessories belonging to the
occupants of the vehicles.
Cameras,
recording devices, including transmission gadgets belonging to the station were
smashed, and badly destroyed.
SaharaReporters
learned that the Television crew included reporters, cameramen, technical
engineers,and drivers.
The vehicles
that also accompanied the AIT crew, believed to be at least two cars, were also
smashed, and badly damaged, said a source who was at the scene, and had told a
SaharaReporters correspondent some moments after the incident.
It is not
yet clear if the Television crew were actually targeted, or if they only fell
victim to a random attack.
But, our
SaharaReporters correspondent can authoritatively report that the station's
television news crew in Ekiti state had for the few past months been a presence
there. They were assigned there to report on crime, and political activities on
a daily basis in Ekiti state, as the June 21governorship election draws nearer.
A police
officer who requested anonymity confirmed the attack on the television news
crew incident to SaharaReporters, but could not actually speak for certain
about their identities, or affiliations, or if the thugs were actually members
of any political party
