The passing of renowned medical practitioner, Dr. Adebiyi Edun has been described as an exit of an icon, whose contributions have had a major impact on the development of medical practice.
He was a doctor, a healer,
teacher, researcher, and inventor. His passion to eradicated disease and
contribute to the body of medical knowledge drew him to join the world of
medical practitioners.
Born on Friday 9th December 1955
at Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos Island to the family of Late Mr Albert
Adedeji Edun and Late Mrs. Gladys Ayodele Edun, Adebiyi Edun had his primary
education at Christ Church Cathedral Faji, Lagos from 1961-1967. He proceeded
to Kings College, where he earned his Secondary School Certificate between 1967
and 1973.
He gained admission into the
prestigious University of Ibadan for a Pre-Med degree between 1974 – 1976 after
which he was accepted into the medical program at the University College
Hospital (UCH) Ibadan Medical School from 1976-1979 where he obtained an
M.B.B.S (1979).
While at the University of
Ibadan, Adebiyi, was very active in his department and was an embodiment of
excellence. He assisted many of his classmates through extra tutorials and
extra classes anchored by him.
After his mandatory National
Youth Service, he started his career as a Senior Medical Officer at Eko
Hospital, Surulere, Lagos between 1981 and 1983. He also served as the Medical
Executive and Deputy General Manager of Health Aid Limited from 1985 to1987. He
launched his own private company B.E. Medical Services and served as the
Managing Director/CEO from 1987 till his demise.
Through his work at B.E. Medical
Services, he worked on various health projects as Principal Consultant on
several projects across various states in Nigeria financed by international
organisations such as the World Bank, Department for International Development
UK (DFID), UNFPA, Scottish Overseas Health Support, and British ODA, USAID,
United Nations Drug Control Program (UNDCP) etc.
He also worked as a medical
consultant on several local projects for the Federal Government of Nigeria and
the Federal Ministry of Health such as the Drafting of Procedural Manuals for
National Health Insurance Scheme (1999) and was the National Consultant,
National Health Insurance Scheme – Federal Ministry of Health, Lagos.
Dr Edun attended several medical
conferences in several countries including Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland
and the United States of America.
Dr Adebiyi Edun’s pure love and passion
for God was seen in the way he utilized his knowledge of medicine by providing
free health services in his neighbourhood, churches and at health outreaches
across the country. In spite of his outstanding achievements, Dr Edun never
attributed them to be his own works, but he ascribed it all to the grace of
God.
Dr Edun was a great gift from God
with a very large heart for family, friends, colleagues and even strangers. He
was a very disciplined, hard-working and self-motivated person who was not intimidated
by the challenges of life. He was very kind, generous and helpful to everyone
who came his way.
He had a formidable geo-political
and social network, nationally and internationally. He possessed considerable
material wealth. And he possessed ample personal attributes of kindness,
generosity and tolerance, amongst many others, to make his sojourn an
outstanding success that it turned out to be.
He was not only a successful
medical consultant but was also a fervent Christian who served the Lord with
his gifts and abilities. He was designated a Pastor-In-Charge in The Foursquare
Gospel Church in Nigeria, a post he held for seven years.
He married Iyiola Olatokunbo Edun
(nee Oshinowo) in 1983, they have four children from their union.
Dr. Adebiyi Edun passed away on
Wednesday 13th January 2021 at the age of 65 years. He is survived by his wife,
children, and grandchildren . He was very much loved and will be greatly missed
by them and by his many friends, associates, colleagues, and loved ones.
Dr Adebiyi Edun provided an
invaluable service that helps better the world we live in. He made communities
healthier and helped countless beneficiaries to strive for wellness.
He will be remembered for his
remembered many research projects, perseverance, and compassion.
We commiserate with the members
of Edun’s immediate family, the entire extended family at home and in the
diaspora, and indeed, our nation Nigeria. We take solace in the fact that he
lived well and has left a precious heritage of which we can be forever proud.
